THE Provincial Government of Negros Occidental has released a total of P525,144 worth of insurance benefits to 174 Himamaylan City farmers who are enrolled in its Agri-Fishery Insurance Program.

The crop insurance program is a joint initiative between the provincial government and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) to insure agricultural crops in the province.

The province regularly provides funds in the crop insurance program to address the gaps in the agriculture sector and to adapt to the climate change that has been adversely affecting crop production and threatens the state of food security.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, who led the turnover of benefits at the Talaban Covered Court in Himamaylan City on Wednesday, February 23, said the improvement of the lives of Negrense farmers through the development of the agriculture industry is vital in poverty reduction.

“If there’s improvement on the technology for local products, the lives of our farmers and their families will also improve,” he added.

Also present during the turnover were Himamaylan City Vice Mayor Justin Gatuslao, Provincial Agriculturist Edmundo Raul Causing, Supervising Agriculturist Dina Genzola, City Agriculturist Sandra Vargas, and Ariel Batuigas of the PCIC, among others. (With Capitol Reports)
