THE Philippines' positivity rate for coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases went down to five percent on Sunday, February 27, 2022, meeting the threshold recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Based on the Department of Health's (DOH) Sunday case bulletin, the five percent was from the 25,313 samples tested on February 25.

The WHO said a positivity rate of less than five percent for at least two weeks is one of the indicators that the Covid-19 infection in a certain area is under control.

Positivity rate is the percentage of people who test positive for coronavirus of those overall who have been tested.

The DOH also recorded 1,038 fresh cases of Covid-19. This was the ninth straight day that the country logged below 2,000 cases.

Active cases remained high at 52,961. Of the cases, 47,910 were mild, 2,780 were moderate, 1,417 were severe, 556 were asymptomatic and 298 were critical.

The health department also logged 51 new deaths, raising the nationwide death toll to 65,401 or a case fatality rate of 1.54 percent.

A total of 1,999 patients also recovered from Covid-19, bringing the total recoveries to 3,551,687 or 97 percent.

As for the healthcare utilization rate, 26 percent of intensive care unit beds, 22 percent of isolation beds, 15 percent of ward beds and 13 percent of ventilators were occupied.

The DOH said all laboratories were operational on February 25, while one failed to submit data to the Covid-19 Document Repository System.

Local government units in the country have recently eased restrictions in their areas due to a decreasing number of cases. Minimum health protocols, however, are still being implemented. (SunStar Philippines)
