DENGUE cases in Bacolod City have increased by 4.2 percent this month compared to the same period of last year, records from the City Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (BCESU) showed.

City Health Environment Sanitation Division chief Dr. Grace Tan said Bacolod had 50 dengue cases with two deaths as of March 12, while there were only 48 for the same period last year.

Barangay Singcang leads with seven dengue cases recorded followed by Mansilingan with six, Granada and Mandalagan with five, and Estefania, Cabug, Tangub, Pahanocoy and Banago with three cases each.

“Dengue fever is caused by a virus from a female aedes mosquito that lays its eggs in moist and dark areas,” Tan said, adding that these insects are also nesting in containers filled with water.

She urged residents to maintain cleanliness inside their homes and surroundings, dispose of or dry any containers that may hold water and seek medical help at the onset of symptoms.

Tan encourages the public to put screens on their windows and wear long sleeves and pants.

“If dengue cases are noted in your area, always drink water with Oresol or conduct fogging,” the doctor said, as she enjoined everybody to cooperate in the fight against dengue. (with PR)
