DEAR Dr. Fritz,

Good day. I just wonder if there is food for the brain. And if they exist, do they really work?

Thanks for your reply.

Dear Katmundo K.,

Yes. Food for the brain really exists and they work as well. Here are some to feed your thoughts.

1. Caffeine

Though, this wouldn’t make your IQ any higher, but, the caffeine in your coffee, chocolate, energy drinks and some medication can guarantee to wake up your brain. But, the effects are not that long, though. And don’t overdo these drinks, as this will make you jumpy and edgy.

2. Sugar

Sugar is our brain’s choice as its fuel source. But, this sugar is the glucose, which our body processes from the sugars and the carbs we eat. So, don’t expect much from fruit juices, as they can only offer short-term lift to your memory, thinking and mental capacity. And go easy on sugar, as it has been associated with heart disease, obesity, and other medical conditions.

3. Don’t skip breakfast

Eating breakfast may improve short-term memory and attention as shown by some studies. But, be sure to eat the right one. Go for high-fiber whole grains, dairy, and fruits instead of high calorie breakfasts because the latter tends to hinder concentration.

4. Fish

This is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are the key for brain health. Studies have shown that these foods are associated with lower dementia, mental decline and stroke risks. And for brain and heart health, get two servings of fish weekly.

Opps! We have more things to talk about. Let’s talk more about this in the next issue. Until then!
