ILOILO City Public Safety and Transportation Management (PSTMO) has initiated a Traffic Academy to train traffic enforcers for a month starting April at YMCA Building.

Mayor Jerry Treñas took to task PSTMO head Jeck Conlu to have the existing personnel and applicants undergo the training.

They already started with basic orientation on understanding what the Traffic Academy is all about.

Conlu said the initiative is considered first-of-its-kind for a local government unit.

“We will professionalize our traffic aides since most of them have no formal or sustainable training, so we have to improve and capacitate them every year,” Conlu said.

“They will be taught with basic traffic signaling system to improve their skills to manage road safety and how to handle situations such as arguments in the streets,” he added.

The short course program includes written exam in a two-week classroom setting, then one-week practical learning application, and another week performance assessment while on-duty.

Conlu said they will be given a second chance for re-take if they fail the first time.

“They should know how to perform their duties as well as their basic legal rights and that of the drivers. They will have a refresher course every year,” said Conlu. (PR)
