ILOILO City was chosen as pilot site for low carbon urban transport system of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) together with Department of Transportation (DOTR) that will last for a year.
Mayor Jerry Treñas welcomed this development, which he said complements environmental initiatives in the metropolis.
The joint project is geared toward reducing pollutants in the air by embracing environment-friendly mass transport system.
This will be implemented in collaboration with Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO), City Environment and Natural Resources Office, and City Planning and Development Office.
“The partnership will create programs and policies for public transport and that include tricycles, jeepneys, and PUVs which are number one contributors to pollution due to emissions from their engines. Thus, we need to reduce its high impact to the environment,” PSTMO head Jeck Conlu said.
“They will help us technically towards becoming a smart city with digitalize traffic management to address congestion. Our newly approved Local Public Transportation Route Plan (LPTRP) is not just a concept to modernize jeepneys with lesser emissions and get rid of traditional ones, it also considers the environmental impact,” he added.
Conlu said the project will identify modern yet environment-friendly transport systems feasible for the city. (PR)
