A deadly pandemic, destructive typhoon, and now heavy rains that are turning this year’s supposedly dry season into somewhat a natural anomaly, are just temporary obstacles to the eventuality that man will soon try to test his limits outside his comfort zone.

It’s not the plot of “The Truman Show.” It’s the historical evidence of how people are wired to discoveries and attach themselves to the thrills brought on by adventure.

The island of Cebu is certainly not lacking in adventure; one just needs to know how to look. In this particular case, set your eyes down South.

Welcome to the town of Badian, home of the famed Kawasan Falls. Through time, the town has evolved, and now the tourist spot offers more than just a quick dive into its natural water attractions.

Have you tried the New Badian Canyoneering Adventure? Resumed in February, tourists both local and international have leaped from these gorges of between 10 and 60 feet.

Aside from promoting the adrenaline rush, Badian is also encouraging tourists in contributing to environmental protection and rehabilitation. In fact, a tree-planting activity is available for campers, trekkers and canyoneers.

“The Badian experience is nothing less than exhilarating. Canyoneering is an exciting product in itself. Add to the equation a naturally redesigned landscape and new activities to enjoy and you have something worth looking forward to,” said Department of Tourism Central Visayas (DOT 7) Director Shahlimar Hofer Tamano, who recently test-ran the canyoneering route. Also, there are now a total of eight jump spots from where guests can take the plunge.

When the weather is better, a day of canyoneering awaits you in Badian (or in its neighboring municipality, Alegria). You’re not alone in waiting for the sun to come out—a recorded estimate of 300 guests frequented the two Southern towns daily right before the pandemic hit in March 2020. The new and improved canyoneering spot was supposed to be reintroduced in late 2021, but plans had to be changed due to Typhoon Odette.

After two months of rehabilitation work and nature’s own way of healing, one can now appreciate the fresh growths of various plants and tree species seen along the canyoneering route.

“Visitors may anticipate a new adventure altogether, starting with a trek to lush Barangay Sulsogan. Guests may plant narra or tugas saplings where the LGU has designated a tree-planting area along the route,” shared the Department of Tourism in a statement.

“The first jump into the inviting pool of deep blue happens from an imposing promontory in Sulsogan and continues through 2.54 kilometers of thrills, passing through picturesque Barangay Baljaan before landing in the well-known Barangay Matutinao segment of the Kawasan river system,” it added.

Make the summer of 2022 worth it—explore Cebu.
