(Foreword: This is the continuation of our response to Katmundo K. on his query on the food for the brain.)

DEAR Katmundo K.,

Now, moving on...

5. Nuts and dark chocolate

These are good sources of vitamin E, which is related to the decrease in cognitive decline as one ages, as shown by some studies. What is good with dark chocolate is that it has natural stimulants like caffeine along with its powerful antioxidant properties.

But, limit yourself to an ounce of nuts and dark chocolate a day to reap all the benefits without the fear of excess calories, fat and sugar.

6. Avocados and whole grains

A diet rich in whole grains and fruits like avocados can lower the risk of heart disease and cut bad cholesterol, reducing the risk of plaque buildup and enhancing blood flow, which can fire up your brain cells.

7. Blueberries

Studies have shown that they may help protect the brain from the damage due to free radicals, cutting down the effects of age-related conditions like Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

8. Vitamins, minerals, and supplements

So, which works? Vitamins B, C, E, beta-carotene and magnesium may promise brain-boosting powers, but they are only good if your diet lacks those specific nutrients.

Moreover, though there are optimistic claims about ginseng, ginkgo, and vitamin, mineral, and herb combinations, but, more evidence is still needed to seal their declarations.

But, along with these foods I have listed above, be sure to do the tips below to get that brain power in action:

Get a good night’s sleep.

Stay hydrated.

Exercise to help sharpen thinking.

Meditate to clear thinking and relax.

Good luck!
