Cargo ship catches fire at sea; mariner dies, 3 others wounded

ONE seafarer died while three others sustained major burns as their cargo vessel went ablaze in the waters off Barangay Pooc, Talisay City, Cebu on the morning of Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022.

The second engineer of mv General Romulo was declared dead when a huge fire destroyed the accommodation area of the ship.

The casualty was identified as Nelson Polvorosa, 62 years old from Cavite. Members of the Philippine Coast Guard and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) retrieved Polvorosa’s remains past 4 p.m. Polvorosa’s body was stuck in the debris in the ship’s interior.

An investigation by the BFP will determine the cause of the fire. The firefighters were able to control the fire from spreading further in the ship past 12 p.m.
