REEVE Ugsang scored on a putback with four seconds remaining to lift the Danao City-MJAS Zenith past the San Juan Knights, 90-88, in the Filbasket Summer Championship on Monday at the San Jose del Monte City Sports Complex.

Danao City was facing an uphill battle as they trailed, 83-86, with less than two minutes left in the ballgame. However, Regie Basibas scored on a putback off a Brylle Meca miss while Patrick Cabahug drained three free-throws after he was fouled while shooting a triple by San Juan’s Justin Gutang, to put Danao City in front, 88-86 with 30.5 seconds remaining.

The Knights, though, tied the score at 88-all after Gutang muscled his way inside for a bucket while getting fouled by Basibas. The big man missed the bonus free-throw and on Danao City’s next possession, Cabahug shot a three-pointer that missed. Fortunately, Ugsang was there to grab the offensive board and put it back in to shove Danao City in front, 90-88, with 4.6 seconds left.

San Juan still had shot at either tying or winning the game but Jhonard Clarito was denied at the rim by Danao City as time expired.

The win snapped Danao City’s five-game losing streak and boosted their win-loss record to 2-6. San Juan dropped to 6-4.

Basibas led Danao City with 23 points and six rebounds, while Meca had 15 points, five boards, and three steals.

Ugsang came off the bench and asserted himself down low, producing 13 points and 12 rebounds. Andrey Armenion also flirted with a triple-double with his 14 assists, nine points, and six boards. (JNP)
