Lacson: Our Lenten vacation trip

I HAVE very fond memories of this province since my cousins and I grew up visiting Iba beaches every year. The times that we enjoyed swimming on the beaches still remain vivid in my mind, which is why I also make sure to impart the same experience to my kids now.

Last week, my family and I visited the second farthest municipality in Zambales which is Candelaria. It was my fourth time to be in the said municipality and I invited them to check out Potipot Island which I have twice visited already. Unfortunately, Potipot Island is still closed to the public as well as the Hermana Menor Island in the nearby town Sta. Cruz. Thus, I was left with one option for our island hopping adventure and that is the Magalawa Island in Palauig.

From the resort we were booked in (Potipot Gateway Resort), we travelled by land to the Masinloc Wet Market and Port to ride our boat going to Magalawa Island. It took us thirty minutes to reach Masinloc from Candelaria, and another 30 minutes to reach the island in Palauig from Masinloc. It is important to pre-book your boat rental ahead to ensure that you will have a safe and confirmed trip to the island.

Before reaching Magalawa Island, the view of the white sand bar will actually give you excitement and thrill. For those who wish to visit it, check out the resorts that are offering day and night tour packages. Armada Resort is the more popular one but you may also check out Ruiz Resort on the other side of the island. We spent around eight hours on the island, enjoying the pristine white shores and the calm waves while watching the kids enjoy swimming and playing. Indeed, it was a memorable and enjoyable trip for my family.

I am proud to know that we do not have to go out of our region to enjoy white sand beaches like Boracay. We do have several white sand beach locations in Zambales such as Magalawa Island, Potipot Island, and Hermana Mayor and Menor Islands. Just like the title of a vlog of a local Youtuber known as Miss Lery which features different places and destinations in the province of Zambales, let us visit our own wonderful spots and landmarks first. Zambales muna!
