250 athletes join Dapitan City duathlon race

SOME 250 athletes from different parts of Mindanao and Visayas participated in duathlon competition on Sunday, April 24, in Dapitan City, known as the shrine city of the Philippines.

This, as Dapitan City resumed its different activities as part of the city's program to attract tourists after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dubbed as Mayor Rosalina "Nene" Jalosjos Duathlon, the event was held at the Dapitan City boulevard. It a five-kilometer run, 15-kilometer bike race, and three-kilometer run.

Apple Marie Agolong, Dapitan City tourism officer, said the duathlon event consisted of seven categories.

These are: open elite-road bike; ladies open; 15 years old and below; 16 to 19 years old category; 20 to 29 years old category; 30 to 39 years old category; and, 40 years old and above category.

The winners in the open elite-road bike category are the following: Franklin Yee of Team Go for Less, Cebu City, champion; Cipraine Topia of Trinics Team, Pagadian City, first runner-up; John Alcala of TRI SND Barracuda Team Dapitan/Opkurs, second runner-up; Ervince Acas of Team Dapitan/Opkurs, third runner-up; and Denver Dayunot of Team Go for Gold, Dipolog City, fourth runner-up.

The Ladies open category winners are: Yna Trinidad of Team JRMSU Varsity, Dipolog City, champion; Safea Enso of Trizur Team, Pagadian City, first runner-up; Mareel Pranza of Rambo Team, Pagadian City, second runner-up; Mae Tubo of Trizur Team, Pagadian City, third runner-up; and Jamie Lyn Lacaya of Team Opkurs, Dipolog City, fourth runner-up.

In the 15 years old and below category, the winners are as follows: Ryan Jade Balladares of Dapitan City, champion; Pablo Romulo Ageas of Tam Ice, R.T. Lim, Zamboanga Sibugay, first runner-up; Khen Ressureccion of Trizur Team, Pagadian City, second runner-up; Jehnel Alcaide of Bomba Team, Dipolog City, third runner-up; and Klent Pabadora of Trizur Team, Pagadian City, fourth runner-up.

The 16 to 19 years old category winners are the following: Kenneth Bonda of TRI SND Barracuda, Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Lanao del Norte, champion; Joshua Reyes of Trizur Team, Pagadian City, first runner-up; Dan Henry Bajao of SAB CC, Ozamiz City, second runner-up; Mark Vincent Cierro of Trizur Team, Zamboanga City, third runner-up; and, Leo Alde of TRI Binidayan, Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte, fourth runner-up.

The winners in the 20 to 29 years old category are: Erlincito Peonila of Spectrum Runners Team, Dumaguete City, champion; Patrick Jay Entaligando of Dipolog Road Runners, Dipolog City, first runner-up; Nestone Alabastro of Dipolog Road Runners, Dipolog City, second runner-up; Romeo Clamohoy of TRI SND Barracuda, Lanao del Norte, third runner-up; and Agustin Gonzales Jr. of Ozamiz City, fourth runner-up.

Those who won in the 30 to 39 years old category are the following: John Rey Tumanda, TRI SNS Barracuda, Cagayan de Oro City, champion; Rudy Pontanial Sebuco of TRI SND Barracuda, Lanao del Norte, first runner-up; Adraine Tirol of Team Walay Ensayo, Ozamiz City, second runner-up; Paterno Dionsay, of Team Walay Ensayo, Clarin, Misamis Occidental, third runner-up; and Michael Acas of Bikers Lane Team, Dipolog City, fourth runner-up.

The winners in the 40 years old and above category are: Ibnorjan Abdul of Trizur Team, Pagadian City champion; Winston Tan of Trizur Team, first runner-up; Darwin Tindugan of Project X CBT, Dipolog City, second runner-up; Amelito Taborada of Badi Team, Dipolog City, third runner-up; and Ritchie Redoble of TRI ICE, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, fourth runner-up.

The prizes include cash, plaques, finisher medals, free meals and drinks, free event shirts, and two race plates.

Duathlon is an athletic event that comprises two disciplines: running and cycling. It is almost always a run, bike, run competition.

It is typically held in a continuous run-bike-run format, with the transitions between the disciplines also contributing toward overall race times and positions. (SunStar Zamboanga)
