TWO out of five earthquake fault lines in Davao Region were identified in Davao City, according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) on Wednesday, April 27, 2022.

CDRRMO head retired Police Colonel Alfredo Baloran said during a radio interview that these fault lines were identified to be the Lacson and Dacudao Faultlines that transcend some barangays in Davao City.

“Kanang lugara, naa na siyay fault lines. Matud pa sa Phivolcs (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology), kung aduna paglinog, ang kana na lugar naay tendency na mulihok ang fault lines,” Baloran said.

(Those areas are along the fault lines. According to Phivolcs, if there is an earthquake, there is a tendency for the faultlines to move.)

The Lacson and Dacudao Faultlines were identified in coordination with Phivolcs. Baloran said the activity was started three years ago during the pre-Covid-19 pandemic time, but so far, only two are identified out of five known fault lines in the city.

The CDRRMO head said they are working with Phivolcs to resume the said activity as soon as possible since identifying the remaining faultlines is crucial to safety and disaster preparedness in the city.

The areas within the Lacson and Dacudao Faultlines are decked with CDRRMO signages in order for the public to easily identify the faultline areas, but some residents have complained that the signages cause panic.

“Kining mga signages, part na siya sa atong public awareness sa ilaha. Wala man pud nato sila giingon na immediately vacate the area,” Baloran said.

(The signages are part of public awareness. We did not tell them they needed to evacuate the area immediately.)

“Kon dili nato ipahibalo sa atong mga kaigsuonan, kon adunay incident and maapektuhan sila, dako kaayo na konsensya sa atoang bahin. So mas maayo na atong ipahibalo nga kanang lugar nila naa’y fault lines.”

(It’s dangerous if we don’t tell the public and they get affected during an earthquake. It’s better to let them know that their areas are within the faultlines.)

Because of this, Baloran also cautioned regarding constructing within the faultlines. Although it is allowed, constructing infrastructures and buildings within the faultlines may need additional requirements to secure the integrity of the buildings in the event of an earthquake.

“Safe naman siya provided na imong establishment, mosubay gyod siya sa tama na proseso sa pagtukod. Halimbawa... according to Phivolcs, dapat kaya niya ang mga magnitude eight.”

(It is safe provided the establishment is built following the required process. For example, according to Phivolcs, the building should withstand a magnitude eight earthquake.)

Baloran said CDRRMO is implementing an information drive and awareness campaign. He added that the office is also eyeing to invite families living within the faultlines to a dialogue with CDRRMO regarding earthquake safety education.

“Ato silang storyahon og tudluan kung unsa dapat ang preparations na dapat nilang himuon... preparations just in case kung adunay naa’y kusog na pag linog,” he said.

(We will talk to them and educate them regarding proper preparedness and the things they should do in case there is an earthquake.)
