In eight days, we get the chance to chart the course of our nation’s history. There is the vote for continuity. And there is the vote for change.
Change is not always for the better as those of us who have lived far more years than others know. And so, we resolve to pick a leader who will give us the right change—the change for better.
If you haven’t decided who to pick as president, take some time to ponder upon the answers to these questions.
Which candidate, upon election, is going to give our economy a shot in the arm? Which candidate is going to boost jobs, income and investments? Which candidate is going to restore the confidence of the international community in our country?
Which candidate has a track record of good governance and zero corruption? Which candidate is making a personal sacrifice to serve God and country? Which candidate is going to lead with integrity?
Which candidate is going to have empathy for the mocked and marginalized? Which candidate bears the brunt of injustice and tragedy? Which candidate is going to lead with compassion and courage?
Which candidate is going to bring this nation the dignity it deserves? Not those who do not have dignity, at all. Not those who make up stories, intimidate and bully. Not those who continuously lie about degrees they did not receive. Not those who choose to revise history insulting those who actually lived through it.
Which candidate is not going to sell us out? Not to corporate entities or to global superpowers. Which candidate is not going to put our sovereignty up for sale? Which candidate is going to fight for the dignity and respect of every Filipino in the world?
Which candidate is going to make us proud? Which candidate is going to inspire us to work harder and better by showing us we can take the high road, beat the odds and the bullies in the backyard? Which candidate is going to bring honor, duty and accountability to the presidency?
It’s not a difficult choice. But we do need to choose from a place of discernment not from a place of dogmatism. We do need to rise above our pettiness and petulance.
When my niece was in high school and campaigning for a spot in the Student Council, little kids said they’d vote for her because she was pretty and they liked her name. Sounds amusing from the mouths of babes but downright sacrilegious from the mouths of voters sadly oblivious to the significance of suffrage.
It’s not about how they look or how they seem. It’s about who they are. And who they can become. It’s about who possesses a record of distinction in work ethics, moral courage and governance—that’s who you vote for.
In a week, we get the chance to change the course of our nation’s history. Let’s vote for the change we deserve—the change for better.
