Last weekend, Tyson Fury solidified his vise-like grip over the heavyweight division by stopping Dillian Whyte in six rounds in front of 94,000 fans at the Wembley Stadium.
It was Fury’s 23rd stoppage win in 32 fights with no losses. Whyte fell 28-3, 19 KOs.
THE FIGHT. Whyte boxes out of a southpaw style and most boxers are often confused when a lefty is in front of them, especially if you are largely unprepared and didn’t do your homework.
Not Fury. He switched stances from southpaw to orthodox and used his size successfully in fending off Whyte’s sharp punches early in the fight.
The first three rounds were competitive but you got a sense that Fury was merely biding his time and setting traps.
An inadvertent clash of heads in the 4th resulted in a cut above Whyte’s right eye.
In the 5th , Fury landed a thudding body shot and towards the end of the round wobbled Whyte with several right hands.
Both fighters were brawling in the 6th with Fury using his size to move Whyte back, when the end came abruptly with less than 10 seconds left.
With Whyte standing in front of him, Fury suddenly uncorked a right uppercut and followed it up with a slight shove as Whyte fell down.
The challenger tried his best to get up and managed to beat the count, but he wobbled and stumbled towards the ref, forcing the latter to call for the denouement of the fight.
Whyte put up a good fight but at the end, Fury’s size was just too much. The uppercut from Fury didn’t even appear to have too much torque behind it, but it was his leverage—being several inches taller than Whyte, which allowed him to land that blow with knockout impact.
STREAK. Philippine boxing’s losing streak continues as both Sultan and Carlo Demecillo fell to their respective opponents in the international boxing stage.
Late replacement Jonas Sultan lost to Paul Butler in their WBO bantamweight title clash. Sultan stepped in for John Riel Casimero who was disqualified and gave a good account of himself but was unable to get into rhythm against the elusive Butler.
Meanwhile, Sho Ishida of Japan stopped Demecillo in the 8th round of their contest in a good competitive bout held at the Edion Arena in Osaka, Japan.
