SM Prime showcases resiliency, sustainability programs in exhibit

DESPITE being one of the biggest chains of shopping malls in the country, the SM Prime Holdings Inc. keeps its commitment of advocating for environmental protection by promoting the practice of sustainability and resilience.

On Monday, May 2, an exhibit showcasing some of SM Prime Holding Inc.’s initiatives that inform about and promote sustainability and resilience was launched at the the SM City Pampanga Event Center.

Dubbed as “Connecting Today to Tomorrow,” the exhibit, held in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), runs from May 2 to 29.

SM City Pampanga Assistant Mall Manager Charm Bacani said the company has been committed in promoting environmental protection and preservation through various initiatives they are implementing across their mall branches.

“This is just one of the many initiatives of the SM Prime that is anchored on promoting resilience and sustainability. Even before the start of pandemic, we have launched several programs which focus on sustainability such as the Trash-to-Cash, Bike to SM, and just recently the Plastic Waste Collection program,” she said.

The SM’s Trash-to-Cash aims to promote recycling by giving customers access to exclusive discounts in exchange for their empty packaging of health and beauty products, while the Bike to SM programs advocates for alternative and healthier mode of transportation, and Plastic Waste Collection initiative calls for proper segregation of waste.

DOST Provincial Director Mary Michelle Quiambao, meanwhile, thanked the SM Supermalls for its continued partnership with the government in promoting sustainability and resiliency.

“Napakalaking bagay sa government na may katulong kami sa pag-encourage ng ating mga kababayan na makiisa sa ating advocacy on environmental protection kaya we are very thankful sa SM,” she said.

Councilor BJ Lagman, who is also the chairman of Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, also lauded the continued effort of SM Supermalls in advocating for the environment.

“Malaking bagay itong mga ganitong exhibits sa pagmulat sa ating mga kababayan kung papaano nating maisave ang kalikasan para mapakinabangan pa ng mga susunod na henerasyon,” he said.

Meanwhile, to further promote its advocacy, the SM Supermalls featured the works of renowned Kapampangan artist Fernando “Andy” Bondoc.

Bondoc is known for recycling waste, particularly wood, and turn it into a part of his material for his copper bonsai artwork.

“Ako at ang SM ay nag-share ng same advocacy for environmental protection and preservation pero maliban doon, malaking bagay din sa aming mga small artists na finefeature nila kami sa ganito kalaking exhibit,” he said.
