THE SunStar media group bagged seven journalism titles in the 9th Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA) held online Friday, May 6, 2022.
Of the seven awards, two went to SunStar Cebu, one to SunStar Bacolod, and four to SunStar Davao.
SunStar Cebu’s photographer Amper Campaña won the Photo of the Year award for his “Pandemic Heroes” photo that showed firefighters helping a resident with difficulty walking to get away from a fire that hit Barangay Capitol Site in Cebu City on June 22, 2021.
Former SunStar Cebu editor-in-chief Nini Cabaero won the Column of the Year award for her “The Chilling.”
For SunStar Bacolod, its editor-in-chief, Erwin Nicavera, won the Explanatory/Investigatory Video Story of the Year Award for his documentary “Alter Boy.”
SunStar Davao’s social media editor Ace Perez bagged two awards: Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year and Digital Storytelling: Best Social Media Video Categories, while reporter Ralph Lawrence Llemit got the Breaking News of the Year for Digital award.
SunStar Davao editor-in-chief Reuel John Lumawag was named Editor of the Year.
The 9th GMEA celebrated the “excellent work of the media and content creators in telling powerful, rich stories that influence this challenging period.”
“Using digital platforms, these inspiring, new breed of storytellers are able to find ways to uplift lives through digital technology -- through narratives that ease burdens and brighten up spirits,” it said. (LMY)
