Pagasa warns vs. extreme heat, advises on best time to vote

THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has urged the public to cast their votes in the early morning or late afternoon of May 9, 2022, to avoid inconvenience due to extreme heat.

Pagasa Visayas Weather Bureau Chief Al Quiblat told SunStar Cebu Friday, May 6, that the temperature on election day may reach 32 degrees Celsius with a maximum heat index of 39 degrees Celsius.

Quiblat said the best time to vote is before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. when the temperature is not that hot.

The Commission on Elections has announced that voting hours are from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Quiblat also urged voters to drink plenty of water, bring an umbrella and face towel, and wear light color and light weight dresses as much as possible.

According to Pagasa’s forecast for Monday, the weather will be generally fair for most of the day.

However, there is a 20 percent chance of rain in the afternoon and evening due to localized thunderstorms.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Cebu City said individuals who will have high body temperature upon entering the polling precincts will be placed in the school’s isolation facility.

Councilor Joel Garganera and EOC deputy chief implementer said their temperature will be checked every 15 minutes.

If the temperature will not subside, the individual will still be allowed to vote inside the isolation facility, said Garganera.

The councilor also said personnel from the EOC and City Health Department will be deployed in the polling centers in the city on election day.
