THE San Carlos City Government in Negros Occidental, through the Heritage for Culture and the Arts Council, held the Salbaro Making Exhibit to promote salbaro as a heritage delicacy on Friday, May 13, at the People's Park.

The activity was conducted in observance of the city's month-long celebration of the National Heritage Month.

Dr. Archilles Ponferrada, the city’s Heritage for Culture and the Arts Council head, said the activity featured the native bread Salbaro, a food trademark of the city.

Ponferrada said the delicacy has been enjoyed and sought for by both locals and tourists, adding that it has been a city heirloom for more than a century, making it a part of San Carlos City’s culture and heritage.

He hopes the exhibit will encourage business-minded locals to continue to make this kind of bread, which is traditionally served with coffee.

Engr. Magnolia Antonio, City Planning and Development coordinator who represented Mayor Renato Gustilo in the event, lauded Ponferrada for making the celebration of the national heritage month a reality.

Antonio said the activity not only gives joyous activities but will help preserve and conserve the local heritage.

He noted that Salbaro has been the locals' favorite and hoped that the cooks will continue making this kind of food since new generation of locals and tourists are now giving attention to this bread.

Local cooks Almalyn Ohagan, Catherine Ohagan and Jane Rebaja demonstrated the traditional making of Salbaro to the staff of Tourism Office, People's Park Management Office, City Environment Management Office and City Planning & Development Coordinator's Office. (PR)
