DSWD-Davao assists 60 abused OFWs, dependents

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 11 recorded a total of 60 abused OFWs and their dependents in the region that have been assisted by its International Social Services Office (ISSO) program.

According to DSWD Social Welfare Officer III, Fretzie Ann Ellyn Flores, as of May 2022 there are 32 cases served in Davao del Sur, 11 in Davao del Norte, six in Davao de Oro, seven in Davao Oriental and four in Davao Occidental.

“Aside from the psychosocial support, we provide counseling and stress debriefing, aid assistance to the individual, this includes medical, tambal, then financial to those walang-wala na gyud sila basta eligible sila for the assistance (medical assistance, and financial support if they don’t have income) ,” Flores said during an interview with SunStar.

Flores said they also provide educational assistance for eligible dependents of OFWs, livelihood programs, travel permits, or certificates for dependents if they need to travel abroad for vacation.

Flores clarified that eligible OFWs to avail of these services are “distressed and undocumented (OFWs)”.

“Wala gyud silay papel, or dili gyud legal ang iyahang pagsulod didtoa sa foreign land, while Owwa focuses more on documented (OFWs), DSWD focuses more on undocumented (OFWs) (They are undocumented, or they enter the foreign premise illegally),” Flores said in an interview with dxRD on May 17, 2022.

The ISSO is the central authority for international social services for Filipinos living abroad and is responsible for coordinating and addressing concerns and requirements of ISSOs at foreign posts that are brought to the attention of the ISSO and the Central Office, and ensuring that ISSOs at foreign posts deliver and provide appropriate, effective, and efficient programs and services for distressed and undocumented Overseas Filipinos and their families.
