LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan is confident that he can finally get approval for his long-overdue P3 billion annual budget for 2022 now that majority of his allies occupy City Council seats.

Chan made the statement on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, or more than a week after the recently concluded national and local elections, in which his entire slate won against Team Deretso led by incumbent Lapu-Lapu City Lone District Rep. Paz Radaza.

The City currently uses the reenacted 2021 annual budget amounting to P2.7 billion after the proposed P3 billion annual budget for this year was not yet approved by the City Council, which is dominated by the opposition bloc.

“The budget is still on the table. So it depends on the new council if it will push to approve and if there are necessities that were not included in the budget, we can do a supplemental,” he added.

Asked for comment, Vice Mayor Celedonio “Celsi” Sitoy said the new council will first approve the Annual Investment Plan (AIP), and the 2022 budget will be taken up thereafter.

Meanwhile, said he already reminded all the department heads that it is high time that they will help each other for the good of the city after a second mandate to serve was given to him by the people.

“Akong gipahimangno nila nga humana ang election, it is high time nga magtinabangay ta, maghiusa ta sa new mandate nga gihatag, nga pwede ang katong mga challenges nga atoang giatubang, ato tong mahatagan og solution ug kasulbaran ang maong mga problema,” said Chan during a press conference on Wednesday.

(I advised them that since the election season is over, it’s high time that we help each other and unite especially now that we have been given a new mandate. That the challenges and problems we’ve faced in my previous term are given solutions.)

Chan hopes to solve the long-standing problems on drainage, flooding, traffic in the city, as well as repairing damaged structures during the onslaught of Typhoon Odette such as multipurpose gyms and schools.

“Tagaan nato nga makabangon pagbalik ang mga Oponganon to give them livelihood,” he said. (Let’s give our constituents to rise up from the crisis by giving them livelihood.
