LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan will not require travelers from Western Visayas to present a negative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RRT-PCR) or rapid antigen test result to enter the city.

Chan said they do not want to cause hassle to travelers, particularly tourists, who will enter Lapu-Lapu through the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

This, despite the reported local transmission of the more infectious Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 in Western Visayas, particularly in Iloilo.

Chan reiterated the need to balance saving lives and economy, which he said just started to recover amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

“For me, wala na kinahanglanan. Most important kato ra gyud social distancing, wearing of face masks, proper hand washing. Mao ra gyud na akong gikoan. We need local tourists to come in our city,” said Chan.

“Since karon naghinay-hinay natag balik, mapugngan na pod na siguro, maagapan ra gyud nato na sila if we will follow the precautionary measures nga atong pagabuhaton,” he added.

The reelected mayor believes that the people have been already educated about the coronavirus, as he expressed hope that the Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 will not cause severe infection.

Chan also said that many people have already been immunized against the virus, citing the city only had six Covid-19 active cases as of May 17, 2022 despite the number of people who gathered during the election campaign period.

Three of the active Covid-19 cases in Lapu-Lapu City were admitted to hospitals, while the others are undergoing home isolation.

Data from the Lapu-Lapu City Health Office also showed that only five of the 30 barangays in the city have active Covid-19 cases. These include Pajo with one case, Babag (1), Looc (1), Pajac (2), and Maribago (1). (MKG)
