Dengue cases in Negros Occidental up; 4 dead

DENGUE cases in Negros Occidental have increased more than double in the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2021, with four deaths recorded.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ernell Tumimbang said Thursday, May 19, that dengue cases in the province from January to May this year reached 389.

Tumimbang said there were only 172 dengue cases from January to May 2021.

"We are taking the necessary measures to prevent the cases from increasing," he added.

San Carlos City had the most number of cases at 36, followed by Hinigaran with 34, La Carlota with 32, Himamaylan City with 30 and Sagay City with 24.

Tumimbang noted that based on its trend and cycle, dengue cases usually increase every three years.

"We (already) expect the increase and it is now happening," he said.

The provincial health officer also confirmed that there are dengue cases at the Teresita Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City, affecting some of its personnel.

With that, Provincial Administrator lawyer Rayfrando Diaz II already ordered for an investigation and proper monitoring.

The hospital management has been advised to remove all stagnant water like containers within its premises and screens.
