PH bows down to Thailand in women’s football

THE World Cup-bound Philippines Women’s National Team failed to advance in the gold medal match of the Women’s Football tournament of the 31st Southeast Asian Games after a 3-0 defeat in the hands of Thailand on May 18, at the Cam Pha Stadium in Quang Ninh, Vietnam.

Veteran midfielder Silawan Intamee scored the opening goal in the 22nd minute.

The Filipinas tried its best to score an equalizer but experienced Thai goalkeeper Waraporn Boonsing was on spot all match long.

Striker Taneekarn Dangda, the tournament’s top scorer, scored her fourth goal in the 31st SEA Games after hitting the back of the net in the 47th minute, while 19-year-old defender Ploychompoo Somnonk scored in the first minute of extra time.

Meanwhile, host Vietnam, a gold medal winner in Women’s football in the last two editions, also advanced to the finals after beating Myanmar, 1-0.

The Philippines faces Myanmar in the bronze medal match on May 21. The Philippines also faced Myanmar for the bronze medal in the last SEA Games in 2019 in the Philippines. Myanmar beat Philippines, 2-1.

The Philippines finished fourth place in 2019.
