A BARANGAY kagawad shot and killed his own brother in Cuayan town, Negros Occidental at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2022.

Major Robert Indiape, chief of Cauayan Municipal Police Station, said Kagawad Freddie Caballero, 51, of Barangay Basak is still confined at the hospital as of Monday, May 23, 2022, after he sustained a wound on his left arm.

Investigation showed that Richard Caballero, 49, the kagawad’s younger brother, was creating alarm and scandal outside their house while holding a bolo.

Indiape said the barangay official tried to pacify his brother and also prevented him from going to the nearby Sitio Narzone.

Instead of listening to his older brother, the victim hacked him, the police official said, adding that the suspect was left with no choice but to shoot the victim thrice using a .38 caliber revolver.

The brothers were rushed to the Cauayan District Hospital where the victim died.

Indiape told SunStar Bacolod that the kagawad’s gun is probably unlicensed.

He added that it is still uncertain whether the victim’s family will be filing charges against the barangay official who is still confined at the hospital.

Should the victim’s family decide not to pursue the case against him, Indiape said he could still be liable for illegal gun possession.
