AROUND 6,000 Cebuano students will be able to enjoy educational assistance from the Cebu City Government’s scholarship program for the school year 2022-2023.

Vice Mayor and Councilor-elect Donaldo Hontiveros said the 6,144 scholars were able to take the career pathways exam that determined the degree program that they can pursue.

On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, Hontiveros and Mayor Michael Rama led the launching of the first-ever scholarship summit at the social hall of the Cebu City Hall.

Hontiveros said the purpose of the event is to reconnect with the alumni of the scholarship program since its first launching in 2010.

“We just wanted to be updated on where they are right now and if they were able to serve the city or the community,” said Hontiveros in a mix of Cebuano and English.

Hontiveros added that by doing this, they are hoping that the success stories of previous scholars will inspire the current and incoming scholars of the city.

In his speech, Rama encouraged the representatives of the different schools and City Hall employees to also reach out to the parents of the scholars.

“Go down to the parents, check on what the parents are doing... that is my challenge,” said Rama.

Rama said this will allow the City Government to learn more about the educational and other needs of the scholars.

The scholars are entitled to receive P10,000 per semester from the City Government and their schools will also provide them with discounts as a counterpart to the City’s program.

Hontiveros said a budget of P50 million was allocated for this school year’s scholarship program. The City Council also plans to pass a supplemental budget to cater to additional scholars.

As of this school year, the City Government has partnered with 23 private and public institutions for the scholarship programs.

These schools are the following: Asian College of Technology, Banilad Center for Professional Development, Benedicto College Inc., CBD College, College of Technological Sciences, CCMC - College of Nursing, Cebu Eastern College, Cebu Mary Immaculate College, Cebu Normal University, Cebu Technological University, Cebu Institute of Technology - University, CITE Technical Institute, Don Bosco Technical College - Cebu, Golden Success College, Rizwoods College, Southwestern University, St. Paul College Foundation, University of Cebu (UC) - Banilad, UC Main, UC METC, University of the Philippines - Cebu, University of the Visayas, and University of Southern Philippines Foundation.
