A 31-YEAR-OLD man was rescued by personnel of the Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) after he jumped off Marcelo Fernan Bridge on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.

The man (name withheld to protect his identity) was only identified as a resident of San Remigio, Cebu.

Investigation revealed that the man is mentally disabled and was earlier admitted to a hospital in Bogo City, Cebu also for trying to commit suicide.

His family earlier reported him missing as he allegedly escaped from the hospital, rode a bus, went to the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, and jumped off it.

CDRRMO Operations head Felix Suico Jr. said personnel of the CDRRMO immediately responded to the incident upon receiving a report about it. They then rescued the man, who was found floating on the water under the bridge.

The man was rushed to a hospital in the city and is currently under stable condition, said Suico.

This is the second suicide attempt on Marcelo Fernan Bridge this month.

Last May 24, a woman died after also jumping off the bridge.

The woman’s body has been left unclaimed in one of the hospitals in Mandaue City, added Suico.

He said suicide is not the ideal solution to any problem, stressing that those suffering from depression or are going through rough times could contact the following hotlines to ask for help:
