POLICEMEN are now readying charges that will be filed against the suspect in the killing of a 67-year-old vegetable vendor in Barangay Greenhills, San Fernando town on Thursday, May 26, 2022.

Larry Lantape Sabellano, 37, a sand and gravel extractor, was arrested by the police during a hot pursuit operation on Friday at 5 p.m., May 27, 2022, in Purok Moringa, Sitio Cogon, Barangay Greenhills.

The knife used in the murder, however, was not recovered by the police.

Sabellano was tagged by two female witnesses as the one who robbed and killed vegetable vendor Diomedesa Lapera Gedaro, a widow whose head was nearly decapitated when found by some residents in a ravine not far from the victim's house at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Senior Master Sergeant Herbert Pananganan, investigator of San Fernando Police Station, said in an interview with SunStar Cebu that they are now preparing the robbery with murder charges against Sabellano based on the affidavit or sworn statements of the two witnesses.

The two witnesses (whose identities are withheld) reported to the police that they saw the suspect hurriedly left the crime scene with a shoulder bag on his hand.

The police immediately conducted a hot pursuit operation but the suspect was not there in his house.

They were able to arrest the suspect the following day, Friday, while he was gathering sand and gravel that he would sell to his customers.

Sabellano, however, denied the accusation against him, saying he went to his friend's house to borrow money at the time of the incident.

But Sabellano could not provide details when asked by the police about the name and location of his friend.

The child of the victim revealed that more than P11,000 cash had been lost from her mother.

The victim left her house early morning on Thursday to pay for their electricity bill and dues in a lending company and buy goods after.

Pananganan said they received information that the suspect was formerly detained at the Cebu City Jail. (GPL, TPT)
