Pangan: To the victors belong the spoils

THIS Is a maxim for war veterans and war mongers but it still applies to present-day tussles.

The recent national elections gave way for the emergence of new blood in the Senate: the amazing"bad boy" of show business topped the senatorial race and this win gave him bragging rights to choose committee chairmanships he wished to hold. Of course, the other winners all want to claim chairmanship of committees which provide perks and privileges.

Senator Robin Padilla (I still wonder why he won though) should now brush up on constitutional law and jurisprudence to keep up with the rigors and responsibilities of the Committee on Constitutional Reforms. A non-lawyer would surely be baffled by various issues confronting the committee chair and Padilla has nothing to show but the braggadocio honed by his years in showbusiness. Whew!

Had Neri Colmenares and Guillermo Eleazar won, they would have been good choices for committees on justice and defense and national security. Ditto with detained Senator Leila de Lima. This feisty lady senator would have been a force to reckon with in the Senate, but...Such is the working of fate and dark politics.

Add to this group is Antonio Trillanes IV and you would have a brave young man standing up even to the high and the mighty. But no, we chose the more popular ones. We just hope that they (the winners) deliver on their election promises. Sana.

Senator Dick Gordon is one good material but somewhere along the way, his fiery stance got waylaid and landed at near bottom of the winning slate. One is curious on who will replace him as chair of the powerful blue ribbon committee.

We have to live with the prospect of having President-elect Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos, Jr., for the next six years. But if by chance he gets disqualified we have to bear another Duterte to lead us: Sara Duterte-Carpio. Aruy! Then, we would have a strong woman at the helm, a heavy puncher at that. Aruy, again!
