San Fernando celebrates ‘day of farmers’

FERNANDINO farmers and farming enthusiasts gathered on May 27, 2022 at Heroes Hall for the celebration of “Farmers’ Day,” hosted by the City Agriculture and Veterinary Office (Cavo).

This celebration is observed every year to recognize farmers’ contributions to attaining food security in the city by providing them with farming tools, pieces of machinery, goods, and financial aids, according to Dr. Cristina Sangumay, city agriculturist.

For this year, the celebration was highlighted by the awarding for the recently held activities of the Cavo, including “Fernandino Farmers’ Week Awards,” “Best Organic Practitioner,” “Quarantine Gulayan Mo, Show Mo-School Edition,” and “Search for Pinaka.”

The following individuals, barangays, and schools are this year’s awardees for Fernandino Farmers Week: Top Rice Producing Farmer – Rolly Lozano; Top Corn Producing Farmer – Jay Tapang; Top HVCC Producing Farmer – Alberic Pangilinan; Top Rice Producing Barangay – Del Carmen; Top Corn Producing Barangay – Panipuan; Top HVCC Producing Barangay – Maimpis; Top Rice Gainer Barangay – San Felipe; Top Corn Gainer Barangay – Panipuan; and Top HVCC Gainer Barangay – Maimpis.

For Best Organic Practitioners the awardees are (first place) – Amando Fernando, Jr. and (second place) Joewer Serrano.

For the Quarantine Gulayan Mo, Show mo (school edition competition) the winners are (first to fifth place) Calulut Integrated School, San Fernando Elementary School, Sindalan Elementary School, San Isidro Integrated School and Pampanga High School.

And for the "Ang Pinaka" event, the winners are Longest Sitaw – Jerry Cunanan; Longest Eggplant – Joselito Tolentino; Longest Upo – William Undecimo; Longest Malunggay – Marcelino Musni; Heaviest Mango – Amando Fernando, Jr.; Heaviest Guava – Jojit Calubag; Heaviest Cassava – Rudy Cunanan; Heaviest Gabi – Joel Laquihon; Heaviest Papaya – Alfredo Catacutan; and Heaviest Tilapia – Orlando Salvador.
