THE fiesta celebration of this capital city was marked with the inaugural blessing of the brand new and modern public market.

The City Market Plaza, which stands at a 1.1-hectare lot at the heart of the city’s Poblacion area, is a two-storey facility divided into two sections — east and west wings — that is connected by park-inspired bridge.

City Engineer Anele David said that the city government assured that the building’s design is conducive for commerce as top priority is the welfare of both vendors and market-goers.

“Industrial type ang design para less maintenance cost pero at the same time presentable pa rin at siyempre, comfortable and conducive for commerce,” she said.

She also assured that is resilient of pandemic due to its open-space concept, and floods and earthquakes.

“Doon sa baba meron tayong al-fresco dining tapos itong pinaka-design niya ay hindi na kulob katulad noong mga naunang market. Maliban diyan, pinag-aralan talaga ang elevation para masiguro na hindi aabutan ng baha and at the same time, the building is earthquake-resilient,” she explained.

David furthered that there are available 150 parking slots for four-wheeled vehicles and additional area for tricycles and kalesas.

Meanwhile, Mayor Edwin Santiago said that the opening of the City Market Plaza will surely boost the trade and economic activity of this capital city.

“Pinagawa natin itong palengke dahil iyong luma ay fire-hazard na at bumabaha so hindi na siya conducive talaga at itong bagong palengke natin ay magbibigay ng bagong sigla sa komersyo at ekonomiya natin lalo na dito sa Poblacion area,” he said.

Santiago furthered that the opening of the City Market Plaza is expected to boost the tourism activity in town.

“Meron tayong dedicated parking para sa mga kalesa natin so itong mga turista natin pwedeng mamili ng mga native products dito sa ating pasalubong center so may additional destination na ang ating mga bisita,” he said.

The City Market Plaza has 550 available market stalls plus additional area for fruit and vegetable area, food stalls and pasalubong center.
