OFFICIALS of Danao City have canceled some of the activities for the 61st Charter Day celebration to focus on assisting vendors who were affected by the fire that hit the city’s public market on Thursday night, June 2, 2022.

In a statement posted on their official Facebook page on Saturday, June 4, the Danao City Government said only the annual services caravan, the Garbo sa Danao Awards and the blood donation activity will push through.

The canceled activities are the Sidlak Queen 2022, Sidlak Singing Idol, Rakrakan Sidlakan (free concert), Sidlak Badminton Tournament, Sidlak Volleyball and Dayon-Dayon Tournament, Sidlak Environmental Summit, Sidlak Coastal Cleanup and Mangrove Planting and the annual chess tournament.

Danao City’s Charter 2022 Committee decided to cancel the activities so the City can use the funds to help the affected vendors instead.

Earlier, Danao City Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III said they have agreed with the vendors to temporarily close the public market and transfer the stall owners to other areas.

The City Fish Port will be the temporary fish market while the city abattoir will house the meat vendors while the motorpool is still being cleared to accommodate them.

BFP 7 takes over probe

In a related development, officials of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Central Visayas (BFP 7) will take over the investigation on the fire.

Senior Fire Officer 1 Ronald Telledua of the Danao City Fire Station told SunStar Cebu on Saturday, June 4, that the BFP 7’s Regional Fire Arson Investigation and Intelligence Division (RFAIID) will handle the investigation as the damage caused by the fire exceeded P40 million.

Local firefighters said it took them 10 hours to put out the fire, which started around 8 p.m. on Thursday and was declared fire out at 6 a.m. the next day.

The fire gutted some P52.2 million worth of properties. Some 100 of the market’s 779 stalls were razed by the fire.

Telledua said the entire market has been temporarily closed while the investigation is still ongoing.

“The RFAIID will take samples from the fire scene and we will guide them in taking samples that will be sent to Manila,” Telledua added.

The firemen suspect that the wires on the ceiling of stall no. 146 may have started the fire, but they said they still have to determine what exactly caused it.

As to when the vendors would be allowed to sell again at the market, Telledua said this would depend on the RFAIID personnel as they are still taking samples from the fire scene. (BBT, JKV / TPT)
