DO-IT-ALL guard Scottie Thompson of the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) trophy of the 46th season of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) on Sunday, June 5, 2022.
Thompson beat Mikey Williams of TNT, Calvin Abueva of Magnolia, and Robert Bolick of NorthPort for the MVP accolade during the PBA Season 46 Leo Awards at Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
The 28-year-old Thompson became the first Ginebra player to win the MVP award since the recently-retired Mark Caguioa won it in 2012.
Thompson averaged 13.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.2 steals throughout the two conferences of the 2021-2022 season.
Thompson topped the players, media, and PBA voting for a total of 2,836 points, with Williams coming in second with 1,332.
Bolick, the stats leader among the candidates, placed third with 1,295 followed by Abueva at fourth with 1,066.
The MVP plum was the icing on the cake in a superb season for Thompson that also saw him winning the Best Player of the Conference and Finals MVP awards in the Governors’ Cup.
Meanwhile, Williams bagged the Rookie of the Year title but fell short of becoming the second rookie to win MVP in the history of the league.
Thompson was joined in the Mythical First Team by Williams, Abueva, June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel, and Arwind Santos of NorthPort.
CJ Perez of San Miguel, Christian Standhardinger of Barangay Ginebra, Bolick, Matthew Wright of Phoenix Super LPG, and Ian Sangalang of Magnolia make up the Mythical Second Team.
Juami Tiongson of Terrafirma won the Most Improved Player award, while Kevin Alas of NLEX bagged the Samboy Lim Sportsmanship Award.
