THE Police Station 5 operatives have yet to establish the motive in the killing of a laborer at Barangay Alangilan in Bacolod City on Sunday, June 5, 2022.

Captain John Christopher Masangkay, commander of Police Station 5, said they do not have the identity yet of the gunman who shot and killed Rene Mateo inside the compound of his workplace at the barangay’s Purok 12-A Las Altas.

Mateo, 44, a resident of the barangay, works as a maintenance crew member.

Investigation showed that he was about to leave this workplace on a motorcycle when an unidentified man fired at him several times.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died on the spot

Police recovered from the scene of the crime a fired bullet and cartridges of an unidentified firearm.

Masangkay said the area where Mateo was shot is remote and they don’t have witnesses that can identify the gunman.

He said they were only informed by a female concerned citizen who passed by the area that there was a man lying inside the compound.

“It appears to be well-planned and the suspect was only waiting for him to leave the compound [before carrying out the crime],” Magsangkay said.

The victim’s relatives told the police that before the incident, Mateo had a heated argument with three other men working near the compound.

But these men, whose names are being withheld, also denied the killing and they are also willing to cooperate in the investigation, Magsangkay noted.

The police urged witnesses or any persons who may have information to come to them and help the police to solve the killing.
