TEAMWORK and experience paved the way for the Davao City National High School (DCNHS) lady spikers to capture their first championship this year after turning back the Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School (DRANHS), 25-19, 25-20, in the gold medal match of the recently-concluded 3rd PSC Inter-School Girls Volleyball Tournament at the DCNHS Multipurpose Hall.

DRANHS settled for the silver while the Davao City SPED National High School salvaged the bronze by surviving past the Baguio National School of Arts and Trade, 25-18, 27-25, in their battle for third.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Commissioners Charles Raymond A. Maxey and Celia Kiram awarded cash prizes, medals, and certificates to the winners.

DCNHS'r Cahre Ishel Nablea, hailed as the most valuable player (MVP) of the two-day event, said the MVP title and championship mark a milestone of her last playing year.

"I am very honored and very overwhelmed kasi di ko inexpect na makukuha ko itong award (because I didn't expect to receive this award)," said the 18-year-old resident of Mandug who also received the best setter award.

The DCNHS earlier finished fifth in a national volleyfest held in Dumaguete City thus winning the inter-school girls' meet is a welcome respite for the squad.

An avid Bea Morada fan, the MVP said it's unfortunate that she was not able to play in the 2020 Palarong Pambansa where they could have represented the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet but Covid-19 happened.

She was lured into the sport during fourth grade as she often watched students play volleyball while waiting for her elder sister.

Her teammates Dustyana Joy Mallari and Sheena Cafe, who romped away with the best opposite attacker and best middle blocker, respectively, were also overjoyed for the team's victory.

Mallari, who recently recovered from a nerve problem in her right body, said she's happy to be able to contribute to the team.

"Teamwork and our connection inside the court," according to her, are the keys for them to win despite the last ditch efforts of their rivals to force a deciding set.

DCNHS, according to her, trained for only two months, meeting at DCNHS every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Born in Pampanga, Mallari's athletic genes were courtesy of her mother who used to be a shot put player and who also knows how to play volleyball. Her aunts also played basketball. Her family migrated to Davao City in her fourth grade.

Cafe, meanwhile, said they may not have been fortunate to land a place in the Dumaguete City nationals, but wining the PSC tournament is a feat they are proud of.

"Expect na para sa amin talaga itong championship. Overwhelming ang feeling. Naka-recover kami sa second set di namin na-expect na sunod-sunod silang mag-score. Inisip namin laro lang talaga at i-enjoy lang (We expected that this championship is really ours. It's an overwhelming feeling! We recovered from the first set not expecting that they would score consecutively. We just thought of playing our game and enjoying it)," Daylisan said.

Ten teams, recommended by the Department of Education (Deped) Davao City Division, competed in the event supported by the City Government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office. They represented the three congressional districts of the city.

DCNHS, coached by Cristy Balbon, was also bannered by Khey Aleck Pablo, Nicole Bañez, Alexxa Correlo, Sophia Pabilona, Patricia Mordeno, Kym Osorio, Mayumi Clarion, Renalie Remedios, and Cathierain Namia.
