TORIL Police Station Commander Police Major Carol Jabagat urged violators of face masks to pay their penalties to avoid a warrant of arrest.

“Tagaan man ka’g three days aron magbayad after ma-isyuhan og ticket, ang ginabuhat pa gani nato ani ginatawagan sila to encourage nga bayaran ang ilahang penalty kay P500 man na siya,” Jabagat said in an interview with Davao City Disaster Radio on June 10, 2022.

(We’ll give them three days to settle their penalty after citation. We even call them to encourage them to pay the P500 penalty.)

Jabagat said to avoid filing a case, face mask violators were given ample time to pay the penalty.

“Ginatagaan gyud na og ample time, pag-moingon og ‘sir nakalimot ko sir, akong bayaran ugma or sunod adlaw, amo na syang tagaan pa gyud og time because we only have one month para ma-prepare ug ma-file ang kaso,” Jabagat said.

(We give them ample time. When they say they forgot to pay and will pay it the next day, we really give them time because we only have a month to prepare and file the cases.)

Violators of City Ordinance No. 0307-20, which requires the wearing of face masks in public, face a fine of P500 for the first offense, P2,000 for the second offense, and P5,000 or one-month imprisonment for the third offense.

Jabagat said they educate the violators on the consequences of not paying the penalty.

“Among gina-explain sa ilaha if dili nila bayadan, mogawas ilahang warrant of arrest syempre madakpan namo sila and then bigger penalty sya, so instead nga modako ilahang penalty, dapat bayaran nalang nila kay P500 na na siya,” Jabagat said.

(We explain to them that if they are not going to pay, a warrant of arrest will be issued. They may also pay a higher penalty.)

Aside from imprisonment due to unpaid penalties, violators will also expect that when they apply for police or NBI clearance, the violations will be on their record.
