NEWLY-INDUCTED Negros Occidental Second District Representative Alfredo Marañon III said Saturday, June 11 that he will support the proposal to revive the Negros Island Region (NIR).

“That is the sentiments of everybody (and) as representatives of Negros Island we will sit down to push for its revival,” Marañon said at the sidelights of the inauguration of the P156 million transport terminal in Sagay City.

The congressman added that he thinks it would be easy to lobby for the revival of the NIR especially that incoming President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., like other candidates during the campaign, vowed to support the move.

NIR, which was materialized during the incumbency of his father-the late Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. in May 29, 2015 but was dissolved on August 9, 2017 through an Executive Order issued by President Rodrigo Duterte due to lack of funds.

Earlier, Fifth District Representative Emilio “Dino” Yulo, III also expressed support for the move of reviving the NIR as it will bring development and progress to both Negros Occidental and Oriental provinces as well as to their respective local government units.

Meanwhile, Marañon also said that the incoming administrator of the Sugar Regulatory Administration should be a Negrense since the island is the number 1 producer of sugar in the country.

Leaders of the sugar industry in Negros Occidental had expressed hopes that incoming administration would appoint a Negrense to become the next head of SRA.

They have been actively calling for the removal of SRA head Hermenegildo Serafica over the issuance of Sugar Order No. 3 which authorized importing 200,000 metric tons of refined sugar into the country.
