12 kilos of 'shabu' seized in Cebu, Negros drug raids

AROUND 12 kilos of shabu worth more than P80 million were confiscated in separate drug raids in Cebu City and Negros Occidental on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

Cornelio Baron Jr., 39, and his sister-in-law Jacqueline Baron, 49, who both hailed from Urban Poor, Phase 4, Fatima Village, Barangay Rizal, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, were arrested during a buybust operation on P. Del Rosario Extention, Barangay Sambag 1, Cebu City around 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police Lieutenant Bonifacio Tañola from the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit, who headed the operation, said the Barons yielded 10 large packs of suspected shabu estimated to cost P68 million, including a pack that they were about to deliver to the police poseur-buyer.

It was learned that Cornelio and Jacqueline came to Cebu to deliver the 1 kilo pack of alleged shabu to their client, who turned out to be a police poseur buyer, while the rest of the drugs had to be distributed to their drug suppliers in the province.

The illegal drugs with green tea label were placed inside the eco bag.

Jacqueline's husband Rex Baron was also arrested by the San Carlos police for having in his possession around 2,000 grams (2 kilos) of suspected shabu with a street value of P13 million earlier at 4 a.m. on Tuesday.

Rex is now detained at the San Carlos City Police Station, while his wife and brother are placed at the Regional Police Drug Enforcement Unit detention cell.

Police Colonel Glenn Mayam, head of the Regional Intelligence Division (RID 7), said they monitored Cornelio and Jacqueline for two weeks before they conducted the raid.

During police interrogation, Jacqueline denied participation in selling illegal drugs, but admitted that she was the one who collected the proceeds from the illegal drug sale.

Jacqueline told police that they would hide the drugs in a pit and would only retrieve them when they get an order.

The Barons will be facing charges in violation of RA 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. (BBT, TPT)
