RECKLESS driving reportedly caused the death of a motorcycle rider after he met with an accident while on his way to work along the national highway in Barangay Ibabao, Mandaue City, Cebu on Wednesday dawn, June 22, 2022.

The victim identified as James Miag-ao, 25, of Barangay Pagsabungan, Mandaue City and a salesman of a food manufacturing company, died instantly after he collided with the incoming dump truck driven by a certain Jovanni Pritos, 26, of Barangay Garing, Consolacion town in northern Cebu.

Miag-ao reportedly overtook a car driven by Mark Angelo Abecia, 31, of Sudlon Maguikay, Mandaue City, but failed to return to his regular lane and instead collided with the truck.

Staff Sergeant Jimson Dapar from the Mandaue Traffic Enforcement Unit said that Miag-ao was on his way to work when the incident happened.

Dapar told SunStar Cebu that Miag-ao was in a hurry then, according to his family, in order not to be late for work.

The victim was brought by the Mandaue City disaster risk reduction personnel to Mandaue City Hospital but was pronounced dead by an attending physician.

The family of the victim decided not to sue the driver of the dump truck as they settled the case amicably on Wednesday afternoon.

Dapar said that the family already released an affidavit of desistance.

The family decided to forgive the suspect since they could no longer bring back the life of their loved one and nobody wanted the accident to happen.

The family of the victim, however, asked the driver for financial assistance for the proper burial of the victim. (GDC, TPT)
