Police probe officers involved in detainees’ escape

A SEPARATE investigation is being conducted on the police officers allegedly involved in the escape of three detainees from Sasa Police Station in Davao City.

“We have also separate investigation for the personnel involved especially sa Sasa Police Station, 'yong previous station commander are already relieved as well as mga personnel na involved relative to the escape of ‘yong mga person under police custody (we have already relieved from the positions the previous station commander and the personnel relatively involved in the escape of detainees while under custody of the police),” PMaj. Teresita Gaspan, DCPO spokesperson, said in an interview with the Davao City Disaster Radio, on June 24, 2022.

Currently, the station commander of Sasa Police Station is PMaj. Rodrigo Mendoza.

“Padayon ang atong investigation are relative ani (The investigation is ongoing relative to this concern), and to determine their interest liability on their part, lapses on their part, para ma-identify kung aduna ba silay liability for serious neglect of duty (so that we can identify if they have liability for serious neglect of duty), as well as the station commander,” Gaspan said.

On June 16, 2022, three detainees facing charges for violations under the Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 of Sasa Police Station escaped, hot-pursuit operation is still ongoing.

“We are still tracking their whereabouts, naa may information asa sila na-track, last na-track (we have received information where they have been tracked and the last time they were tracked),” Gaspan said.

Gaspan said the detainees escaped using a saw and it was plotted during the arrival of the VIPs for the inauguration of Vice-Elect Sara Duterte.

“Busy kaayo sa preparation, daghan kaayo tag security, mao to pag-abot sa mga bisita, latag gyud ang atoang mga tao nga naa tanan sa dalan, ang uban ga-provide sa road security, ang others nag-protocols, so ing-ana ka busy (We were busy at that time for the preparation, we have deployed a lot of security personnel for the VIPs, some of them deployed to provide road security and others are doing [security] protocols),” Gaspan said.

Gaspan said irregularities will not be tolerated.

“Still we do not tolerate that kind of irregularity because that is our work, trabaho nato especially sa mga personnel sa ilahang mga designated tasks (it is our work, especially the personnel has designated tasks),” Gaspan said.

The jail inspectors were only able to find out that the detainees escaped during an inspection.

Gaspan said the personnel involved will undergo due process and will be given an equal opportunity. KSD
