CAUSE-oriented groups assured on Thursday, June 30, 2022 that the conduct of their protest in relation to the inauguration of President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will be peaceful.

Bayan Secretary General Renato Reyes said their program will be held at the Plaza Miranda in front of Quiapo Church which will start at 10 a.m., two hours before the oath-taking of Marcos Jr. at the National Museum of the Philippines.

“Wala ho kaming untoward incident na inaasahan ngayong araw pareho kaming (police) umaasa na magiging mapayapa na magtatapos ang mga nakatakdang pagkilos ngayong araw, wala pong kailangan ipangamba,” he said in an interview.

Reyes said they have not prepared any effigy which is usually being set on fire during the conduct of major protest.

ACT Teachers Partylist representative Franz Castro maintained that there is no truth behind the claims of the authorities that their ranks were planning to disrupt the event.

He said their goal is to express their grievances and demands, especially on the education and labor sectors, for the incoming administration peacefully and orderly.

A representative from the Gabriela Partylist said there are hoping that the police will also respect their freedom of expression and assembly especially by not intercepting their members in checkpoints on their way to Plaza Miranda.

She said among the issues they will bring up were the increasing prices fuel as well as basic commodities which makes Filipinos suffer more amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

The activist groups, as announced repeatedly by the PNP, were supposed to occupy the Liwasang Bonifacio which is nearer to the National Museum of the Philippines, but Reyes said the PNP suddenly requested for them to change their venue to Plaza Miranda as some Marcos’ supporters already occupied the area.

Plaza Miranda and Liwasang Bonifacio were both identified as freedom parks.

Manila Police District deputy director for administration Colonel Raul Tacaca said this is to ensure the peaceful and orderly conduct of the mass actions.

“Sa Plaza Miranda na po ‘yung ating venue bilang konsiderasyon nga sa mga kaganapan sa Liwasang Bonifacio. Maiwasan na ang kiskisan, sa iba’t-ibang grupo at matiyak na magiging mapayapa ang idaraos nating programa,” said Reyes. (SunStar Philippines)
