NEWLY-ELECTED Cebu Sixth District Rep. Daphne Lagon is eyeing to pursue the cityhood of Consolacion and the creation of a national high school in Cordova town during the 19th Congress.

Lagon told SunStar Cebu on Friday, July 1, 2022, that she will file these priority bills on Monday, July 4, at the start of Congress’ regular session.

The sixth district is comprised of the municipalities of Consolacion and Cordova.

Lagon said she intends to prioritize the cityhood of Consolacion because this has been long overdue.

With the recent passage of Republic Act 11683, Lagon said the population and land area of a municipality are no longer required to attain cityhood; but the town must have at least an income of P100 million for the past two consecutive years.

Lagon pointed out that Consolacion already has a yearly income of more than P100 million for several years making it highly qualified to become a city.

The congresswoman also seeks to file a bill creating a national high school for Barangay Ibabao in Cordova.

She cited the struggles of most high school students in Barangay Ibabao and its neighboring barangays, Cogon, Pilipog, and Dapitan who travel for at least an hour to study high school in Barangay Babag.

Lagon said Barangay Ibabao, the second-largest barangay in Cordova, must have its own national high school.

Aside from these two bills, Lagon would also like to amend the law creating the lone district of Mandaue.

She said the sixth district and the lone district of Mandaue must both have proper representation in the Cebu Provincial Board (PB). Currently, the seven legislative districts in the Province is represented by two PB members each.

“Murag salikwaot man nga ang Sixto Distrito ug ang lone district sa Mandaue mag-share og mga Bokal ngadto sa Hunta Probinsyal,” Lagon added.

(Its a bit awkward that the Sixth District and the lone district of Mandaue are being represented by two members in the Provincial Board)

Mandaue used to be part of the sixth district of Cebu until RA 11257 was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte creating the lone district of Mandaue City on April 5, 2019.
