THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Davao Region (BFAR-Davao) is calling on students who plan to take up a course related to fisheries to apply for their scholarship grant.
In an interview with PTV Davao on July 1, 2022, BFAR said they opened the application of their scholarship grant with 26 slots last June 2022 but only a few have applied.
Students who are qualified for the scholarship will receive a full scholarship grant for college if they will take the degree Bachelor of Science in Fisheries. They will also be given free matriculation and other school fees except for dormitory fees; a Monthly stipend of P5,000; a Semestral book allowance worth P2,000; an OJT Support of P3,000; Research/ Thesis/ Special Problem support of P7,000; and Graduation Support of P1,500.
“So wala silay gastuson, malipay kaayo ang mga ginikanan basta mag-study lang gyud pud, karun naglisod baya gyud taman ang mga parents (They will not spend even a penny, their parents will be happy on that as long they will study hard because some parents are really struggling [to support their offspring to their studies]),” Anthony Gonzales, Fisheries Scholarship Coordinator of BFAR-Davao, said.
Qualified students are dependents of registered fisherfolk (Fish-R/Mangingisdang Juan); Indigenous People (IPs) or honor students who are not more than 25 years old at the time of the examination, who has not earned any units in college, and residents of the Davao Region for at least six months.
Requirements for dependents of fisherfolks must be a natural-born Filipino citizen; any Senior High School graduate or graduating student; for high school graduate applicants who completed their high school under the old curriculum, the general weighted average (GWA) shall not be lower than 80 percent; and for Senior High School students under K12 curriculum, graduating students GWA (general weighted average) of the last three immediate preceding semesters of his Senior High School in any Track shall not be lower than 80 percent or its equivalent; of good moral character as certified by the School Head/Principal.
Also, the parent(s)/guardian or the applicant must also be physically residing in the municipality of the Region for at least six months, where the slot of the scholarship program is allotted and the parent(s)/guardian must be registered municipal fisherfolk duly certified by the Municipal
Agricultural Officer (MAO) or the BFAR Regional Office in his/her area.
For the honor students, they should also be natural-born Filipino citizens; any high school graduate or graduating student; who belongs to the Top Ten of his/her graduating class, duly certified by the school head/ principal; for high school graduate applicants who completed their high school under the old curriculum, the general weighted average (GWA) shall not be lower than 80 percent and for graduating students GWA of the last three immediate preceding semesters of his Senior High School in any Track shall not be lower than 80 percent or its equivalent; Of good moral character as certified by the school head; as well as the parent(s)/guardian or the applicant must be physically residing in the municipality of the region for at least six months, where the slot of the scholarship program is allotted.
As for the IPs, they should be a natural-born Filipino citizen; Any ALS (Alternative Learning System)/HS (High School) /SHS (Senior High School) graduates/graduating students; a bonafide member of an ethnolinguistic group in his/her community duly recognized by the NCIP.
IPs who graduated through ALS/high school graduate applicants the general weighted average (GWA) shall not be lower than 80 percent while graduating students under the K-to-12 program, Grade 11 GWA shall not be lower than 80 percent or its equivalent;
They are also expected to have a good moral character as certified by the School Head/Principal and Community Resident Leader and their parent(s)/guardian(s) or the applicant must be physically residing in the municipality/ICCs of the region for at least six months, where the slot of the scholarship program is allotted as well as the parent(s)/guardian(s) must be a member of a particular tribe recognized by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP). Applicants under IPs need to from the clan of “Pamulalakaw” (in charge of waters and water resources) certified by the Indigenous Political Structure (IPS) and Community Leader.
