Deniega tests ex-champ’s mettle

UNBEATEN prospect RV Deniega gets a huge step up in competition as he takes on former world champion Sonny Boy Jaro in an eight-rounder on Aug. 5, 2022 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The 22-year-old Deniega is just in his third year as a pro but he has shown that he’s one of the promising young fighters to look out for.

Deniega made his pro debut in 2019 with a first round knockout of Jun Roy Matias.

Following an 11-month lull in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Deniega returned to the ring in 2021 and outclassed Jovanie Tagusi by unanimous decision in Gen. Santos City. He followed up that win with a second round knockout of Jerry Pabila last Feb. 5.

Meanwhile, Jaro returns to the ring following a three-year hiatus. The 40-year-old former World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight champion last fought in 2019 and was knocked out by one-time world title challenger Nawaphon Kaikanha in the seventh round in a WBC Asian Boxing Council bantamweight title fight in Thailand.

Jaro won the WBC flyweight title in 2012 with a sixth-round technical knockout of Thai star Pongsaklek Wonjongkam in Thailand. He immediately lost his belt to Toshiyuki Igarashi via split decision in his first title defense.

In his prime, Jaro has fought some of best in his weight division—Giovani Segura, Florante Condes, Somporn Seeta, Edgar Sosa, Igarashi and Wonjongkam.

Deniega is 6-0 with three knockouts; Jaro is 46-15-5 with 32 knockouts.
