AN ELECTION official was shot and killed in front of her office in Basilan province, the police reported Tuesday, July 19, 2022.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Junpikar Sitin, Isabela City police chief, identified the victim as Ruayna Sayyadi, the election officer of of Al-Barka, Basilan.
Sitin said that Sayyadi shot and killed around 3 p.m. Tuesday in Doña Ramona village, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan province.
Sitin said that Sayyadi was in front of the Satellite election office of Al-Barka when an unidentified gunman approached and fatally shot her.
Sayyadi was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician, according to Sitin.
The suspect boarded a motorcycle and sped off towards downtown Isabela City.
The incident happened while the Commission on Elections is conducting registration of new voters in preparation for the scheduled election for village and Sangguniang Kabataan officials on December 5, 2022.
Meanwhile, Lawyer Roberto Dela Peña, Basilan provincial election supervisor, strongly condemned the killing of Sayyadi. (SunStar Zamboanga)
