GMA-7 actress Andrea Torres has always been a topic among those who have PWD (person with disability) siblings.
Netizens praised her for being a loving sister to Kenneth.
Andrea says her younger brother Kenneth, a person with Down Syndrome who was diagnosed with autism, is "napakasweet." She adds, "Sinisilip niya ako sa room, we hug and kiss every time we see each other."
However, the 32-year-old Kapuso actress refuses to take all the credit since everyone in her family contributes to helping Kenneth live a more comfortable life.
"Talagang tulung-tulong po kami pagdating sa kanya,"
"Klaro po sa aming lahat na forever namin siyang baby and we’re honored to be given an angel in the family.
"Sabi nga ng parents ko, kaya siya sa amin binigay kasi alam ni God na maaalagaan namin siya nang mabuti, so pinangangalagaan namin yung trust na yun."
The actress admits that it has been quite a challenge taking good care of a person with special needs, but she and her family never complains.
"I guess yung minsan po siyempre sumasagi sa isip ko na naaawa ako sa kapatid ko dahil alam kong hirap siya sa maraming bagay.
"Nasa severe side po kasi siya. Ang prayer naman po talaga namin is to make him as comfortable as possible at palagi lang siya ma-shower ng pagmamahal."
She adds, "For us naman po, hindi siya sacrifice. Maluwang sa puso namin ibigay lahat sa kanya."
After years of therapy, Andrea finds her brother's improvement.
"Marunong na siya magbihis ng sarili niya at may preference na rin siya kung ano gusto niya suotin. Pumipili na siya...
"Nahahawakan na rin niya ang water jug niya at nakakasubo mag-isa.
"Mas nagre-respond na rin po siya sa amin although hindi pa po siya nakakasalita. Pero we know that he understands kasi nagre-react siya.
"Nakakatuwa nga po alam niya pag Ate ang nasa TV. Nagka-clap po siya at tumatawa pag nakikita niya ako sa TV."
Seeing Kenneth achieve these milestones makes Andrea more grateful for everything she has in life.
"Mas na-appreciate po namin ang lahat. Mga bagay na usually ay hindi natin napapansin.
"Kasi siyempre po, sa kanya po malaking bagay yung mga usual na nating ginagawa. Like example, yung paghawak ng spoon.
"Milestone sa amin nung nagawa niya yun. So it makes you grateful for everything that you get to do.
"Also lumaki po talaga ang aming mga puso at ang faith namin sa itaas kasi marami kaming na-experience na miracles through Kenneth."
When Andrea was asked if there is one wish for her brother, what would it be?
"For him to live a long, healthy, comfortable life full of love, and for him to experience more things that will make him happy."
"Wish ko po talaga magkaroon pa ng awareness sa kanila para we know how to handle them better, especially sa public places.
"May mga times pa rin po na may naiinis or sinasama sila sa jokes... Masakit yun sa amin. We should be more sensitive and welcoming."
