NBI official dies in accidental firing

AN OFFICIAL of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) was killed in an accidental firing in his rented house in Zamboanga Sibugay province, the police reported Monday, July 25, 2022.

Police Brigadier General Franco Simborio, Police Regional Official-Zamboanga Peninsula director, identified the victim as Akmad Sampang, 59, the NBI chief in Zamboanga Sibugay province.

Simborio said Sampang was fatally hit in an accidental firing around 8 a.m. Saturday in his rented house in Purok Golden Mango, Poblacion villge, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Iinitial investigation showed that Sampang was cleaning his service firearm, a Glock 40 pistol, when he asked his live-in partner to go out and buy coconut water.

Simborio said Sampang's live-in partner, upon her return, was surprised to see the victim was already lying with blood with a gunshot wound on his chest while his issued firearm was beside him.

He said Sampang was rush to the Zamboanga Sibugay provincial hospital but unfortunately the victim was declared dead on arrival by attending physician.

Simborio said that an empty shell, a deformed slug, and a magazine with 13 live ammunition of Glock 40 pistol were recovered at the scene of the incident. (SunStar Zamboanga)
