THE Consolacion Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO) called on barangay and purok leaders, especially those living near water bodies, to implement strict waste segregation and teach residents to observe proper disposal of garbage.
This developed as the Consolacion LDRRMO saw the need for a unified initiative with Mandaue City officials to maintain cleanliness of the Jagobiao Creek.
Engr. Danilo Capangpangan, LDRRMO head, told SunStar Cebu on Monday, August 1, 2022, that they will meet with the Mandaue City officials to construct the unified plans.
The LDRRMO official said they observed that the Jagobiao Creek never loses garbage even with their regular clean-up activity.
The Jagobiao Creek covers a portion between the boundary of Consolacion and Mandaue, but Capangpangan said Consolacion and Mandaue had individual cleaning initiatives for the water body.
For Consolacion, Capangpangan said they do clean-up activities at the creek daily, along with the town's other water bodies, and so far, they yielded not more than two trucks of garbage.
The clean-up activity, however, was temporarily stopped after Typhoon Odette (Rai) hit Cebu in December 2021.
The usual garbage collected from the creek then were plastic bottles and plastic bags, said Capangpangan.
On Saturday, July 30, as the LDRRMO resumed its clean-up activity, they collected almost a ton of garbage from the Jagobiao Creek.
The trash particularly clogged up on the creek's box culvert, said Capangpangan, adding that one contributor to the clogging was the collapse of its riprap due to the typhoon.
But what concerned the LDRRMO the most was that the garbage nearly covered Jagobiao Creek's delta (mouth).
A river delta is where a river mouth enters another body of water, such as an ocean or lake.
With this, Capangpangan said barangay and purok leaders must teach their constituents to observe proper waste disposal.
He called on the public not to throw garbage in water bodies to also protect themselves from diseases.
"Kay kung limpyo atong kasapaan, minos na sad ang sakit sa katawhan," he said. (HIC)
