THE City Government of Bacolod is now evaluating the proposed location for the establishment of a new public cemetery here, its top official said.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said there were already some proposals for the new location, and that they will be assessing the most convenient and accessible cemetery for Bacolodnons.

“Currently, it’s now being studied on how to do it properly (the burial) for a clean and organized niche,” he added.

Last week, the Bacolod City Council approved a resolution urging Benitez to determine a location for the establishment of a new public cemetery in the northern side of the city.

Councilor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, who authored the resolution, said that the city has ordered the closure of Burgos Public Cemetery on December 1, 2020 upon the recommendation of the City Health Office (CHO) and General Services Office (GSO) mainly because of overcrowding.

"There is therefore a dire need for a new public cemetery that will provide the residents of Bacolod City, especially the indigents and underprivileged, a decent place to bury their loved ones in lieu of Burgos Public Cemetery," he said.

The city-owned cemeteries are situated in Burgos and Barangays Granada and Handumanan.

The mayor disclosed that the city should establish a public cemetery for a long-term purpose.*
