Heart attack is leading cause of death in Cagayan de Oro

MYOCARDIAL infarction or heart attack was the leading cause of death in Cagayan de Oro in 2021, according to the City Health Office.

According to the CHO data, a total of 202 deaths due to heart disease were recorded in Cagayan de Oro in 2021.

In 2016 to 2020, the city recorded 127 deaths due to the disease.

City Health Officer Dr. Rachel Dilla said 28 deaths due to heart disease were logged every week.

Apart from heart attack, the top lifestyle diseases include Covid-19, hypertensive cardiovascular disease, cancer, pneumonia, diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular disease, vehicular accident, chronic kidney disease, tuberculosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Meanwhile, the leading cause of morbidity in Cagayan de Oro in 2021 is animal bite with 1,360 cases recorded.

According to Dilla, the City Government spent at least P7 million for the rabies vaccine.

She reminded those who have pets to become a responsible pet owner to prevent the increase of animal bite cases in Cagayan de Oro.
